Semi-Final The Second – our predictions!

Posted by DINRIL on May 22, 2008

Oooooh, this is a close call. But here, in no particular order, is who we think will join the other finalists following Thursday’s second semi – and they are…

SWEDEN – possibly one of the most glaringly obvious finalists of the entire year, we wouldn’t be surprised if Charlotte scored herself a second victory as well. If she doesn’t qualify, it will be one of the biggest shocks in Eurovision history. We think.

UKRAINE – another very obvious qualifier, this is a fab tune and will doubtless go down a storm on stage – and we wouldn’t rule out another top five finish for the former Soviet nation.

ALBANIA – a good strong ethnic ballad from Olta Boka which has been picking up fans for some time now. Albania’s best effort in a while – deserves to be in the final and hopefully it will be.

SWITZERLAND – the word of mouth on Paolo’s performances in Belgrade isn’t too good, but it’s still popular enough to make it through, we think. Besides, Armenia weren’t very good either and if they can do it…

BULGARIA – again word of mouth is mixed but we are sticking to our guns with this one and saying it will make the final. Otherwise the DJ may have to come and take her away (stop it – Ed)

HUNGARY – well we couldn’t not put our 150-1 investment into the final ten, could we? Expect Czesy to surprise a lot of people on the night – unless of course she brings her shaking mole on stage with her (you just had to bring that up again, didn’t you? Stop it right now – Ed)

TURKEY – one of the best songs in the contet and has the massed ranks of Turks around Europe to vote for it. Would be a big shock for this one not to makee it.

PORTUGAL – a total out of nowhere dark horse this one, but Vania’s ballad has a strong following and should provide a  memorable, dramatic end to the semi. Expect some success to finally come the way of the Portuguese.

FYR MACEDONIA – again we didn’t rate this one at all but we reckon it’ll be popular. Besides, it’s Macdeonia. And they always get through, don’t they?

LATVIA/ICELAND – you know what? It’ll be one of these two and we can’t decide which. So we are cheating and putting both in. We know they won’t both go through but there is an argument for each – Latvia is beloved by the non-Eurovision watching public while Iceland is just a damn good song. In our heart of hearts we would much rather see Iceland in there. But we have a horrible suspicion the pirates may sneak it. Humph.

AND ONE WHICH WON’T GO THROUGH

LITHUANIA – because in all honesty, thinking subjectively and critically and being as fair and constructive as it is possible to be in a Eurovision setting, it is pants. Next.

Tough calls with a lot of inconsistent performers in a much weaker semi-final where almost any country can get through if they knock it out of the park.

Iceland will get zero votes from the east (like Sweden last year). A non-qualifier. Even though a couple of western countries snuck through the first semi-final (which makes me more confident of Sweden and Portugal qualifying), this semi-final has a higher ratio of voting eastern countries than the first semi-final (8 west to 14 east compared to 9 west and 12 east), so the ex-USSR countries power on.

    Ukraine
    Turkey
    Portugal
    Sweden
    Macedonia
    Hungary
    Bulgaria
    Georgia
    Belarus
    Croatia

    Latvia
    Malta
    Denmark
    Iceland
    Albania
    Switzerland
    Czech Republic
    Cyprus
    Lithuania
